Editorial Review for The Red Lantern – by Barbara E. Hernandez
The Scene:
Although the Red Lantern recently dabbled in house music, the nightclub now has a distinct Latin flair. The two-room club offers a bar and a dance floor, each painted black and lit with red-tinted light (hence the name.) The largely male Latino crowd moves easily between urban contemporary and ranchera music as the DJ blasts from a booth above and every last person squeezes onto the crowded dance floor. Getting drinks takes some time with only two bartenders working a 100+ crowd, but the service is always with a smile. Expect to see a handful of drag queens as the night goes on, but most are the clean-cut boys you went to high school with.
Must Have Drinks:
Negro Modelo beer.

Since this listing went live, The Red Lantern has become home to Meatball Magic, currently the longest-running alternative club night in Fresno. Going on two years strong, Meatball Magic takes place every first and third Friday of the month and is always cover-free. Expect to see local glitterati and movers and shakers moving and shaking it to the hottest in indie rock, new wave, 80s, electro, mashups, ironic hip hop, and pretty much anything else the DJ hosts (and you) desire. Occasional special events and live band nights round out the fun. Visit Meatball Magic on Myspace for more info.
Pros: No cover, big and cheap drinks, the best music in the central valley.
Cons: Has to shut down at 2am.

Oldest gay bar in Fresno. Bartenders and patrons not too friendly. 2 pool tables and small dance floor. Drag shows some nights.
