Editorial Review for Veni, Vidi, Vici – by Barbara E. Hernandez

The Scene:
The modish stop by this place to have a few drinks, meet friends and listen to piped-in Sinatra. Gay/Lesbian friendly and akin to a wine cellar, the place also features world beat and Latin music with no cover charge on the weekends, when patrons can slam some microbrews and expensive liquor while wearing velvet and silk. Expect a lot of chatter from the mostly over 30 crowd between sets, including how horror-show Chris looked Friday night and how Tina's dot.com stock skyrocketed last week.

Must Have Drinks:
Columbia Crest Chardonnay Columbia Valley.

During dinner and early evening they serve great food with a quite atmosphere ... by night it becomes a great spot to hang out with friends, they have reggae night on Thursdays, dj's on Friday, and sometimes live music on Sunday (check ahead). The drinks a reasonably priced, 4 or 5 bucks for a beer. They also have a huge patio area out back with a second bar, for those that can't go without a smoke while drinking..

Pros: funky atmosphere, lots of character

Cons: none

This is my favorite expensive restaurant in Fresno. It is located in the Tower District, named after the Tower Theatre, built in 1939. There are numerous, bars, restaurants, and clubs, all within walking distance. It is on Fulton, south of Olive. The interior is small, so reservations are a must. The walls are red brick, usually with art pieces displayed. The front doors look like they are from a 1930's cartoon, there is a hardwood floor, and lights with handmade purple glass shades, hang over the bar. My favorite appetizer is the baked garlic, with goat cheese, in olive oil. The salads are always fresh and exotic. They serve a New York Steak, and a Ribeye Steak, that are both killer. On Friday and Saturday, I always order one of the Specials. The last one I had was, Pan Rosted Beef Tenderloin with Cambozola Garlic Mashed Potoes, Cremini Mushrooms and Ground Mustard Cream Sauce. It was delicious. They have a small, but impressive wine list. There is a, very cool, comfortable, patio, in back, where you can drink, or dine. After the dinner hour, there is often live music, or a DJ. You will see patrons in coats and ties , and evening dresses, and patrons in T-shirts and jeans. The place has a very cool vibe. Ask for Susan to be your server. She is a total professional, and has an incredible sense of humor. Full bar.

Pros: Great food, great vibe

Cons: Closed Mondays

This ethnically diverse bar appreciates the stylish, and its dim lighting against gunmetal gray metallics and brick walls make candlelit tables and its colorful clientele the biggest sources of light in the room. When was the last time you talked over candlelight?  See the full editorial review.
