Editorial Review for Tower Theatre For Performing Arts – by Barbara E. Hernandez
The Scene
Once a movie theater that showed family, foreign and arthouse flicks, the building was closed down due to lack of business. In the late 1980s, community and historical efforts bought and renovated the old Art Deco theater into a regional performance venue. The Tower Theatre is the heart of Fresno's Tower District, where the town's most artistic, bohemian, and often controversial community lives.
The Stage
The decidedly upscale venue attracts an upscale audience and equally classy acts. Linda Ronstadt, Spyro Gyra, and Aaron Neville have all played to packed houses.
While You're There
If you're attending the theater, arrive an hour early to enjoy the surrounding Tower District. Next door is a quirky restaurant, the Daily Planet, and across the street are two community theater troupes. Public parking is abundant and the neighborhood relatively safe, even in the wee hours of night.
